Wick Park Historic District
Wick Park Historic District is located on the North Side just above Youngstown State University. The neighborhood, which is centered around historic Wick Park, is known for once being Youngstown's most affluent neighborhood. Today, the neighborhood has lost many of the grand mansions which once surrounded the park. The remaining mansions are rarely used as single-family houses anymore, with many of them being subdivided and rented to University students by "slumlords." Despite this, the neighborhood is making a promising comeback. |
Recently, the park itself has undergone massive renovations including a new pavilion and disk golf course. Youngstown CityScape is currently attempting to relocate the historic Welsh Congregational Church to the park to be used as a community event center. Perhaps the most significant driver of redevelopment in the neighborhood is Youngstown State University. New home renovations and apartment developments such as the Flats at Wick have drawn university students into the neighborhood. This has led to the revitalization of Elm Street, a quaint business district in the center of the Wick Park neighborhood.
